There’s rare occasions when the virtual sound card that I use (Loopback – which is amazing by the way!) has a complete stoppage of sound. I can’t play anything. I have no idea why, or what causes it.
I try cycling through the system audio sound devices, of my Studio192, the built in speaker, my bluetooth headphones etc… but nothing can bring the MacOS audio device back…
Except running this terminal command:
% sudo launchctl kickstart -kp system/com.apple.audio.coreaudiod
It’ll restart your system CoreAudio, and the sound will start working again. It’s rare, but sometimes you just need to – in the same way you just need to reset your DNS every now and then.
This above command will save you from having to restart your computer, just to get the sound working again.
By the way, if you’ve used SoundFlower for Mac, do yourself a favour and uninstall it. Buy Loopback instead – as it craps all over SoundFlower. I’m Serious. I used to use it, but you can actually visually route audio properly, and it’s more stable and just works.
